Tinnitus affects between 15 – 20% of people at some time in their lives. If you have hearing loss, this jumps up to 95%!

For some, tinnitus is occasional and not overly noticeable, for others however the noise is constant and loud. Living with tinnitus can be a real burden, resulting in increased stress, anxiety, and sleep disturbance.

Tinnitus isn’t a disease or something you contract, it’s a symptom related to your auditory system. Whilst it can’t be completely cured, our audiologists will share with you many of the ways in which tinnitus can be very successfully managed in order to minimise its impact on your daily life.

What is tinnitus?

Tinnitus is the experience of hearing sounds in your ears or head, despite there being no sound coming from any person or thing around you. These sounds can be ringing, buzzing, whooshing, roaring, pulsing, and can be heard in either ear, both ears, or seemingly in the head – it can be constant or intermittent.

Tinnitus is diagnosed by having a hearing and tinnitus assessment with our audiologist here at Sydney Hearing Clinic. A hearing assessment will thoroughly examine and test all the outer, inner, and inner ear health and functionality to rule out any other potential cause of the tinnitus.

Yes. Whilst there is no known cure for tinnitus, your Sydney Hearing Clinic audiologist will recommend and support you through treatment options such as:

 

  • Relative health and lifestyle changes
  • Hearing aids (where hearing loss is present)
  • Maskers (small electronic device creates a sound that may make the ringing or roaring seem softer.
  • Tinnitus-specific counseling to help you adjust and successfully live with the sounds
  • A combination of some of the above depending on your specific needs

If you are a blue pension card holder you do NOT need a referral.

Otherwise to receive a Medicare rebate for the consultation you must have a GP or ENT referral.
